Greetings from Kageno Kenya,
My name is Carlyla Dawson and I am the most recent addition to the Kageno team here in Kenya. I am from Colorado and will be volunteering here at Kageno Kenya for the next several months. I am very happy to be here and look forward to keeping you all updated on what I am doing over here. My first week at Kageno has been busy but very exciting, there are so many great things happening here. I have been getting use to village life and am feeling right at home, thanks to all the wonderful staff members and volunteers here at Kageno. The week started off with a visit to Mafangano, where we were greeted by some very excited community members. The building site for the latest Kageno project is coming right along and the community is anxiously waiting for the building to begin. The greeting we received when we arrived made me see just how important the work Kageno is doing to the local community. The rest of the week I spent interviewing women for a new program here at Kageno Kenya. The KG Micro-Loan and Savings program has been an idea for a long time and is now becoming a reality. The emphasis of the program is to empower the women in the fishing industry with the financial freedom to buy the fish they need, which will help eliminate the silent but deadly practice of jaboya or Fish for Sex. The first phase of The KG Micro-Loan and Savings Program is almost complete. The interviews have been going well but as you can imagine it is not an easy subject to talk about. In the coming week the initial interviews will be completed and the selection process will begin. If all goes well the loans will be given out in the beginning of next week. We have a really great group of women and I look forward to keeping you updated on their progress as they proceed through the program. That’s all for now, until next week………………….
