Well it has been a pretty uneventful week, very quiet here in Kolunga Beach, the weather is cooling down...
the rains are here and people are very busy in the shambas planting and ploughing in preparation of the
rains.
The Lake is also going to be closed. (Sounds weird to say that as if the lake can be closed! This is a
direct translation from mother tongue for no fishing of omena will be allowed in Lake Victoria for a period
of time). Starting April to around July, no fishing of omena is allowed. I believe this is done to give the
fish time to grow and as a kind of restocking of the fish population. The beach population is also less as
most of the migrant fishermen have returned to their homes to visit with their families who they usually do
not see for months as they are busy with the omena. During this time, there is usually less money in
Kolunga Beach and poverty drives many people to desperation. This is my first season in the beach when
the lake is closed and I am sure it shall be very weird seeing the beach without the omena drying on
nets.
